As of August 1, 2025, all Zebra printers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) must comply with EU RED regulations. This ensures that the printers are better protected against hackers and unauthorized use. As a result, setting up a new printer works slightly differently than you might be used to. In this blog, we explain how to do this.

Zebra printers EU RED: safe setup in EMEA

As of August 1, 2025, all Zebra printers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) must comply with the EU RED regulations. This ensures that the printers are better protected against hackers and unauthorized use. Consequently, setting up a new printer works a bit differently than you might be used to. In this blog and in the video below, we explain how to do this.

Key steps for installation

1. Use the Zebra EU RED wizard

Go to the Zebra EU RED wizard: https://zebra.com/asr - The wizard will guide you step-by-step:

  • Enable secure mode

  • Set a password

  • Create a configuration file and send it to the printer

2. Using MDM/EMM software

If you are using a third-party MDM/EMM solution:

  1. First, set a password using the wizard

  2. Temporarily disable secure mode

  3. Configure additional security settings as needed

3. TCP/IP Raw ports and firmware updates

  • Do you need TCP/IP Raw ports (9100, 9200, 9300)? Turn them on

  • Do you want to update firmware via EMM/MDM? Turn on Allow firmware updates

4. Set up MQTT (optional)

  • Connect the printer to your EMM/MDM service via MQTT

  • See the Zebra MQTT API manual for more info

5. Sending the configuration file

  • Copy the file to the clipboard or save it as TXT, JSON, or ZPL

  • Send it via Zebra Setup Utilities or use one of these alternatives:

    • ZDesigner driver

    • ZDownloader utility

    • Toolbox (direct file and command delivery to printer)

    • EZPL/SGD commands on macOS or Linux

Zebra Setup Utilities is useful, but not the only option!

In summary

Due to the EU RED regulations, for new Zebra printers you must always:

  • Set a password

  • Activate security

  • Configure network ports and WiFi correctly

Only then will the printer work as normal and everything remains secure.
